Countercurrent Field

Flueid Boundaries installation view @ Yancheng Museum, Jiangsu, China, 2026

Installation, discarded fishing nets, floating foam, driftwood, marine debris

Countercurrent Field is an installation constructed from discarded fishing nets, floating foam, driftwood, and marine debris collected along the coast of Yancheng, China. Suspended throughout the space, these materials are lifted out of their original environment and reorganized into a field where gravity appears suspended and movement remains unresolved.

Fishing nets stretch across the installation as shifting boundaries, while foam blocks and fragments of driftwood hover between sinking and floating. Removed from the shoreline, the materials no longer function as waste or equipment. Instead, they are reassembled according to the physical logic of underwater currents, allowing tension, buoyancy, and suspension to determine their spatial relationships.

Field trip, material sourcing

People think of boundaries as fixed lines, but the coastline of the Yancheng tidal flats is always changing with the tides. Humans are trying to contain the ocean by harvesting it with fishing gear, but waves break down these human-made barriers, creating a never-ending tug-of-war between the two. This is how I understand the theme of flowing boundaries. I collected all the materials on site from the coast fishing grounds, gathering discarded fishing nets, driftwood and marine debris washed ashore by the sea. The installation hangs intertwined and adrift, with no hard outline, blurring the boundaries between man-made objects and nature, and between the gallery space and the coastal scene.

Visually, it implies that there is no real division between land and sea, between humans and the ocean, and that all tension and confrontation is fluid and fluid.
